You could be fooled into thinking Australia is purely a summer music festival destination, as the festival schedule is jam-packed throughout the warmer months, but you’d be wrong! Australians love good tunes year-round, and we don’t stop grooving just because winter sets in. This winter there is a lineup of fantastic music festivals to warm you up on even the coldest of days.
Thrifty is (crowd)diving into the best festivals across Australia this winter, helping you turn it into a fun-filled road trip to remember.
Splendour in the Grass (Byron Bay, NSW)
Splendour in the Grass is a much-anticipated annual experience for any muso, and 2017 is no exception. July 21st to 23rd in the North Byron Parklands of Byron Bay will heat up with acts such as Queens of the Stone Age, Vance Joy, and Aussie icon Paul Kelly.
It’s a weekend of incredible entertainment with camping available onsite to help you truly soak up that Splendour atmosphere. Held in one of the best locations in the country for road trips, Byron Bay is full of unique sights, stunning coastal scenery, and friendly locals all waiting to welcome you to their little slice of heaven.
Thrifty has a convenient car rental location in Ballina nearby, making it a breeze to explore the region. Be sure to pack those winter woolies and prepare for an onslaught of visitors (and traffic) to the region as fellow festival-goers make their way there.
Australian Festival of Chamber Music (Townsville, QLD)
Looking for something a little more reserved in the way of music festivals this winter? From July 28th to August 5th, the city of Townsville in North Queensland plays home to the Australian Festival of Chamber Music (AFCM). Over nine days, thirty musicians from Australia and around the world converge to put on over 25 concerts and five special events to the public.
If you love classical music, this one is a must. Held in the tropics of Australia this year, you can have a mid-winter getaway without the need for bulky winter luggage. While you are up yonder, why not use the time to explore the Townsville region a little? Take the short ferry ride across to beautiful Magnetic Island or hike up local Castle Hill for glorious vistas of the area.
Luckily, Thrifty has a Townsville car rental location, manned with local experts eager to pass on their knowledge of the area and get you on the road sooner.
Snowtunes 2017 (Jindabyne, NSW)
It may fall on the very first day of spring, but it will still be pretty chilly in Jindabyne. That’s why Snowtunes 2017 made our shortlist for the best winter music festivals to check out.
On the 1st and 2nd of September, the shores of Lake Jindabyne (located at the base of the Thredbo and Perisher alpine resorts) are transformed into a massive open-air stage.
Groove the night away and make the most of the final weeks of the snow season while enjoying the sounds of Klingande, DJ Horizon, Safia, Gang of Youths and more.
Be sure to pack warmly as this mountainous region gets pretty cold, especially at night.
After you hit up the slopes, think about extending your road trip to experience the scenic Great Alpine Way drive while you’re close by.
There are a plethora of music festival experiences across Australia this winter – which one will you be at?
