Thrifty – A Driving Force Behind Walking Wounded’s Great Australian Traverse
04 August 2015
Thrifty has come on board to assist Walking Wounded with their Great Australian Traverse, supported by Virgin Australia, which will raise awareness and funds to help returned Australian soldiers.
Walking Wounded Founder and Executive Director, Brian Freeman, will be traversing Australia on foot with the Roll of Honour (Afghanistan), travelling 65km per day and also kayaking Bass Strait. Escorts to the Roll of Honour (Afghanistan) on this journey will include Families of the Fallen and returned Australian soldiers. Thrifty has agreed to sponsor several support vehicles for the movement of these escorts.
Thrifty is a leading car and truck rental company with over 210 locations across Australia and New Zealand. Their presence at all major metropolitan locations as well as regional and rural networks, means they are well‐positioned for an event with the scope of the Great Australian Traverse.
"We are very thankful to Thrifty for their support," said Brad Skinner, Executive Officer of Walking Wounded. "As the escort party will be on the move every day to engage with 89 towns and cities, we appreciate having reliable vehicles and Thrifty's widespread presence in Australia," Brad added.
Walking Wounded is a charity organisation committed to assisting the psychological rehabilitation and recovery of contemporary veterans, and assisting with employment training and placements.
The Roll of Honour (Afghanistan) commemorates our 41 Fallen Australian Soldiers, and was presented to Brian by Governor‐General Sir Peter Cosgrove on Remembrance Day 2014. This was then encased in a cylinder presented by Director of the Australian War Memorial, Dr Brendan Nelson.
Thrifty's Chief Executive Officer, Tom Mooney, explained that Thrifty in Australia is 100% owned by the National Roads & Motorists' Association, making it the only Australian owned and operated top tier car rental company in Australia. "As a car rental provider for the Whole of Australian Government, including the Australian Defence Force, Thrifty is familiar with working with the personnel who work to serve our country each and every day," Tom said.
The Great Australian Traverse, supported by Virgin Australia, commences from the tip of Cape York on 1 June 2015. Follow updates from the journey at trackthetribute.org.au
