Thrifty concept store opens in Melbourne

Thrifty has officially opened an innovative new concept store at its Melbourne City location.

Following extensive renovations, the Melbourne City store is pioneering a dramatic new way of doing business, making use of the most cutting edge technology, open plan designs and even a new look uniform.

The store itself was based on the vision of Thrifty Regional Manager Andrew Kamphaug and Area Manager David Bezzina.
David said the store was designed to enhance the car rental experience and create a more intimate environment for customers and staff alike.

"We wanted an open plan branch and were keen to do away with the front counter, as we saw this as a bit of a barrier," he said. "Our vision was a modern, interactive retail store."

The fit-out has transformed the layout of the branch, with designated transaction, waiting and interaction areas, and modern lighting has been used to really showcase the retail area.

In a break from tradition, the customer counter has been replaced with pod desks that enable staff to interact with customers in a more intimate and relaxed setting.

On the technology front, a Smart Queue Ticketing System has been introduced so customers can simply take a number and then roam the branch freely without waiting in line. The system cleverly allocates service using electronic priority queuing – it even recognises Blue Chip customers and prioritises them for pick up and return.

Interactive IPADs are available for customers to use, allowing them to access the internet, look up directions or check emails while they wait.

GPS displays and product posters also promote the range of extras available with each rental.

And a feature wall adorned with the Melbourne City skyline provides an impressive focal point and local touch to the modern space.
One of the most talked about changes is the new uniform, which has been designed based on the classic and sleek airline look. Feedback to date has been very positive, with staff and customers both loving the new space.

"The team has been really accepting and welcomed the changes," David said.
"The new uniform feels great on, it washes really well, and customer reactions have been in the order of – WOW, what a fantastic, fresh new look!" he said.
