Launceston is a gem of northern Tasmania. Set at the headwaters of the peaceful Tamar River, this second city of the Apple Isle is a short 20-minute drive from Launceston Airport and a major gateway to the state. Launceston is also one of Australia’s oldest settlements.

The rich settler heritage of this charming town is preserved in its Victorian and Colonial architecture and history as a wealthy wool and wheat trading centre. Take a half-day ‘Rags to Riches’ tour to acquaint yourself with its elegant parks and streetscapes, or visit the historic Inveresk Precinct to discover more about its fascinating past. Right on the CBD’s doorstep are the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery, the National Automobile Museum of Tasmania, and the Launceston Tramway Museum.

Launceston offers scenic attractions, rolling hills and grand natural surrounds to explore. An ideal location makes this boutique city a practical base to see the best of the state’s north – from Tasmania’s prettiest villages to epic natural vistas, like Cradle Mountain and the wilds of Narawntapu National Park.

Renowned as a gourmand’s delight, the Tamar Valley is Tassie’s premier wine region and also one of its most picturesque. At least twenty cool-climate vineyards are scattered through the shores of this agriculturally rich landscape. As one of the top wine routes, it’s well worth a longer tour. The Grape Escape tour is an indulgence over two days, or just take an afternoon and stay for a platter. Linger over a glass before you hand over the keys to your designated driver. What’s more, Launceston is also home to popular brewer James Boag, and a string of other local craft beers.

The milder weather along this tranquil estuary not only produces a nice drop, but also great dairy and flowers in abundance. The region is rich in cheesemakers, and you can visit Bridestowe Lavender Estate which grows an astonishing expanse of vivid blooms. Add to these sensory delights some popular activities that involve penguins, Tasmanian devils, golf with a difference, an awesome gorge and unique caves. There are sights and experiences sure to restore and inspire you – all within easy reach of Launceston, in your hire car.

Find the heart of Launceston in your hire car

But first, you’ll want to explore the local markets and the great things to do in Launceston’s backyard. Begin Saturdays on a fresh note with the award-winning Harvest Farmers’ Market and choose from a selection of premium produce, crisp ciders, organic baked goods, roasted coffee and outstanding seasonal fare. And on Sunday’s agenda: , the World Street Eats Market  and Avalon Market (formerly known as Boardmills) which has arts and handicrafts, music, food and entertainment in a pastoral setting. Follow this with a visit to Design Tasmania in iconic City Park, and explore their evolving collection from the best Australian artisans around the country.

Any day of the week is perfect for Cataract Gorge, a mighty natural feature just two-minutes from the city centre. ‘The Gorge’, as it’s dubbed by the locals, is a popular destination offering plenty of ways to spend the day. Enjoy the spectacular views as you’re transported overhead by chairlift, the largest of its kind in the world. Other attractions include trails for walking and cycling, beautiful gardens, panoramic vistas from the suspension bridge, plus a swimming pool, restaurant and kiosk, café peacocks and an abundance of native wildlife.

To amp-up the adventure try the ziplines, tree ropes and mountain bike park within Hollybank Nature Reserve, just 20 minutes north-east of Launceston. Riders can start on the easy loops then raise the adrenaline on the juggernaut track – a challenging downhill run that stretches 10 kilometres.

Each November, the largest craft fair in Australia is held in this enchanting riverside village when the local population swells from 2,000 to over 30,000. At other times of year, you can enjoy the many galleries, antique and craft shops, the outstanding bakeries and pleasant strolls.

Both seasoned enthusiasts and social golfers will love a day at the iconic greens of Barnbougle Golf Links – a marvel of design with dramatic panoramic views.
