Things to see and do with a rental car in Hobart

Hobart is Tasmania’s capital city, so it’s a great place to explore. MONA, or the Museum of Old and New Art is one of the city’s top attractions, and it’s well worth a visit. With a range of exciting exhibitions, not to mention a great cellar door on site, this is one unique art gallery that you have to see for yourself. You can also drive up to Mt Wellington for incredible views out over the city, and stroll through the famous Salamanca Markets for treats and souvenirs. Meanwhile, if you want to see the iconic (and endangered) Tasmanian Devil, a trip to Bonorong Wildlife Sanctuary should be on your list. This park has a variety of Australian animals in an open-range environment, and you can even handfeed them!

Hobart is also a good starting point for any Tasmanian wilderness adventure. If you’re looking to travel a little further afield, try driving the scenic two-hour route down to Bruny Island, a stunning gem that’s filled with Australian wildlife and hiking trails. Or, venture over to Port Arthur, which is one of Australia’s most historic sites and just 90 minutes from the city. You can explore the area and find out more about its heritage, or even head in at night to take a spooky ghost tour.
Tips and advice when visiting the Hobart region
- Before returning your vehicle to the central city, be sure to refill your tank as there are no petrol stations within the CBD
- Please note that while can take vehicle to Bruny Island, you are not covered whilst the vehicle is on the Bruny Island ferry
