It’s time for a trip to Rockhampton.
Rockhampton is an outdoor lover’s dream. With world-class mountain bike trails, 4WDing, treetop boardwalks, ancient caves, bushwalks, and hikes, you’ll be driving from adventure to adventure for your entire trip here.
Located in Central Queensland, Rockhampton is the ‘Beef Capital’ of Australia. Spot the many bull statues as you drive the wide streets, and try out the local fresh produce. With events that’ll rival the likes of Sydney and Melbourne and access to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, Rockhampton is truly an exciting city. Explore it all with a car from Thrifty Rockhampton Downtown.
Rockhampton is full of unique experiences.
It has a thriving events calendar, so see if you can time your trip to visit the city at an exciting time. Try and catch Pop-Up Polo, the Capricorn Food and Wine Festival, or the Rocky Nats. The Professional Bull Riding is often in Rockhampton, which you can attend while at the iconic Great Western Hotel.
There are plenty of cultures to learn about while in Rockhampton too. Perhaps visit the Dreamtime Cultural Centre, where you can learn about the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures. With daily guided tours, you can learn plenty about the Karingbal and Bidjara people’s ancient connection to the land and their culture. It’s certainly a unique and educational day out.
For those who want a day out in the water, Rockhampton is famous for Barramundi. Hire some gear and head on a boat out to the Fitzroy River to see if you can catch one for yourself. It’s a beloved sport amongst locals and tourists alike - take a trip on a charter boat to learn the local fishermen’s top tips to thriving on the water.
Of course, when you’re in the ‘Beef Capital of Australia’, you’ll have to try some of the produce. There are plenty of steakhouses to try out, like the Headricks Lane Restaurant and Micro Brewery, the Red Lion Hotel, and the CocoBrew Rockhampton to just name a few. If steak doesn’t take your fancy, there are plenty of other delicious eats around town. Try the Boathouse, Oasis Restaurant, Thai Taste, or Pacino’s; filled with delicious options, you’re bound to find something you’ll love.
There are so many hidden gems all around the Central Queensland area.
30 minutes out of the Rockhampton CBD, you’ll find the Capricorn Caves. One of the most impressive cave systems on Australia’s east coast, these dry limestone caves are definitely worth exploring. These caves were first discovered in 1881, and prove to be a fascinating and exhilarating day out.
Just 38 kilometres away from Rockhampton CBD is Yeppoon, which is the gateway to the Capricorn Coast. This is the coast that has direct access to the Southern Great Barrier Reef, so if you’re looking for an incredible experience, drive over and book a boat trip. The Great Barrier Reef is about 2,300 kilometres long in total, and this section covers the bottom of it, so if you’ve been to another section on the coast, be prepared to experience the lesser-known areas. Alternatively, you could head to the islands around the Reef, like Pumpkin, Wilson, Heron, Great Keppel, Lady Musgrave, and Lady Elliot, for a day with a bit of a difference.
