Things to see and do with a car rental in Katherine
Katherine is well known for its picturesque landscape – in particular, the beautiful Katherine Gorge (Nitmiluk). Perfect for walkers, hikers and campers, Katherine Gorge is the ideal place to visit in the dry season (May-October). During this time, you can swim or canoe against the gorgeous backdrop of plunging waterfalls.
The wet season sees the saltwater crocodiles move in to Nitmiluk, so it’s not advisable to swim at this time of year. However, wildlife enthusiasts can do some croc-spotting and there’s still plenty of splendid scenery to enjoy.
You can also head to the thermal pools of Mataranka to the south – they’re the perfect way to relax and refresh after a long day. Meanwhile, if you’re interested in the local history, the Katherine Outback Heritage Museum contains an impressive and varied collection of artefacts, photographs, maps and pioneer memorabilia. There are also number of galleries exhibiting Indigenous art, so you can immerse yourself in Katherine’s rich tradition of Aboriginal culture and heritage.
