Things to see and do with a car rental in the Darwin Downtown area
If you like city life, park life and beach life, then Darwin is the perfect spot for you! It offers the very best of all three, as well as so much more for the discerning traveller.
As the Northern Territory’s capital city, Darwin has a rich Indigenous heritage – which you can learn all about by taking a cultural tour. Covering everything from spear throwing to didgeridoo and clapstick playing, to more detailed and intricate techniques such as learning what it takes to gather and prepare bush tucker, these tours are a truly enlightening experience.
But if the sand and the surf is more your speed, Darwin is also home to beautiful beaches including Casuarina Beach and Mindil Beach, which are well worth a visit. The George Brown Darwin Botanic Gardens or the Bicentennial Park are great for taking a stroll, while the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are popular with both locals and tourists alike. There’s no better place to pick up a bargain on local arts and crafts!
Meanwhile, if you’d like to escape the city, then your Thrifty car can easily take you to nearby Litchfield National Park, or a little further on to Kakadu National Park. From the wetlands to the ancient sandstone escarpments, Kakadu’s natural beauty is truly a sight to behold. So whether you want to soak up the scenery, sample the nightlife, or enjoy the hustle and bustle of a thriving city, Darwin has something for everyone and is a real feast for the senses.
Tips and advice when visiting the Darwin region
Driving between dusk and dawn outside the city area can be risky due to high levels of animal activity at night, and any damage caused by animal accidents won’t be covered under Thrifty’s Damage Recovery Fees. Therefore we always advise customers to avoid the roads at this time.
Please also note that the Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls in Kakadu National Park are not accessible with our vehicles, nor is Arnhem Land. If you are planning on touring around Darwin to Kakadu, a 4WD is usually recommended for these sorts of trips, but a comfortable passenger vehicle is just as good.
