Things to see and do with a car rental in the Darwin area
As the capital city of the Northern Territory, Darwin is a rich and vibrant location brimming with all sorts of things to see and do. With a strong indigenous heritage, beautiful beaches and buzzing nightlife, it has something for everyone to enjoy and is a great retreat for families, couples and more mature travelers. You can get up close and personal with a croc at Crocodylus Park, visit the Darwin Aviation Heritage Centre, or take a cultural tour to learn more about the region’s Indigenous history.
If you love the great outdoors, you’ll be delighted by the variety of parks you can explore – not to mention the gorgeous botanic gardens. Meanwhile bargain-hunters will enjoy wandering through the local markets, which offer up an impressive variety of local arts and crafts. And there’s plenty for foodies to get stuck into as well, with a wide selection of quality restaurants and eateries just waiting to tempt your taste buds.
Of course, if you fancy heading out of Darwin, then your Thrifty hire car will easily take you to Litchfield National Park, which is just a short hour-and-a-half drive away. Other iconic natural sites include the Kakadu National Park – which is about a three-hour drive – where you’ll find ancient Aboriginal rock art, lush wetlands and a third of Australia's bird species. The outback landscape is one of a kind, and something you have to see to believe.
Tips and advice when visiting the Darwin region
It’s best not to drive outside the city between dusk and dawn as there’s a lot of animal activity on the roads at these times, which can make driving dangerous. And unfortunately, if your Thrifty vehicle obtains animal damage as a result, then this isn’t covered under our Damage Recovery Fees.
Our 2WD and AWD vehicles are restricted to sealed/bitumen roads – so if you’re going to get into the dirt, then you’re going to need one of our popular 4WD wagons. They’re great for more adventurous trips, and we can advise you on the ideal model for your particular needs.
Please also note that Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls in Kakadu National Park are not accessible with our vehicles, nor is Arnhem Land.
