Vehicles for rent

Small to medium rentals

Small and medium - ECMR - Toyota Yaris

Hire a small car like a Toyota Corolla to easily get you around Yulara town, whilst saving on fuel and cost. If you need more leg room or space for your luggage, a medium sized car like a Camry could be the vehicle for you.

Mitsubishi ASX

When it comes to our most popular vehicles, the 4WD wagons are top of the list, as they’re the ideal transport if you’re making the trip along the Red Centre Way to Alice Springs or heading out to visit Uluru or Kata Tjuta National Park.

People movers

Toyota Commuter Bus

Hire our eight seater mini bus if you need to transport a larger group. There is plenty of room and comfortable seats for all passengers. As a limited number of buses are available, we recommend you book in advance to avoid disappointment.

Tips and advice when visiting the Uluru region

The vehicle you choose from Thrifty will depend on what you’re planning to do in the region, and we’ll always ensure that you get exactly what you need. If you’re simply heading to Uluru, our 2WD and AWD cars are ideal. However, a drive across unsealed roads will require a 4WD vehicle, which will get you safely over any rough terrain.
You should also note that if your Thrifty vehicle has an encounter with the local wildlife outside of town between dawn and dusk – and gets damaged – then this is not covered under Thrifty’s Damage Recovery Fees, except when driving within the Uluru Township and Kata Tjuta National Park area.

Things to see and do with a car rental in Ayers Rock city area

With a stunning landscape, there’s plenty to see and do around Ayers Rock. If you want to learn about indigenous culture and the history of Uluru, a visit to the cultural centre may be the perfect way to spend the day. Built in 1995 to mark the tenth anniversary of the handover (when the park was given back to the traditional owners), the centre features art, educational talks, and if you’re lucky, demonstrations by members of the local indigenous community.

And of course you can’t visit the area without taking a trip to Uluru. Soak in the beauty of the sunrises and sunsets over the rock – one of Australia’s most iconic landmarks – and make memories you’ll treasure forever. Nearby Kata Tjuta is just as impressive, and it’s the ideal spot to take a stroll, explore, or simply sit back and snap some incredible photos.

You can also drive out to Kings Canyon, which is approximately three hours from Ayers Rock Resort in the comfort of your Thrifty car rental. With a beautiful backdrop of red sandstone cliffs, you can complete the rim walk or explore from the canyon floor for an experience you won’t forget.
