Other useful information for Alice Springs Airport car hire renters
If you want to hire one of our Thrifty vehicles, then just give us a call first to discuss your needs – particularly if you have any uncertainties or doubts about the vehicle you’ve booked or you need advice on what to hire. We always advise our customers to avoid driving between dusk and dawn outside the city, as there is lots of wildlife about and animal damage is not covered by Thrifty's Damage Recovery Fees (except when driving within the Uluru Township and Kata Tjuta National Park area).
If you wish to set off along the Larapinta and Namatjira Drive (also known as the Mereenie Loop), you should note that you can only travel along this road with a High Clearance 4WD. You will need a permit to travel along it, which can be obtained from the Central Land Council in Alice Springs or the Kings Canyon Resort. If you do drive on this road the standard liability of $7,700 applies.
There are a few roads around Central Australia that can only be travelled on with permission from Thrifty, and if you are travelling with another vehicle. These roads include Tanami Track, Gunbarrell Highway, Plenty/Donahue Highway, Canning Stock Route, Oodnadatta Track, Strzlecki track and Birdsville Track.
Please also note that any cars that are hired from Alice Springs are not to travel outside of the Northern Territory.
