Frequently asked questions
What is the most popular hire car in Sydney?
The most popular Sydney car hire is the classic Toyota Corolla, a zippy compact car ideal for getting around the city.
Of all the Sydney car rental options available, the Corolla is a favourite for many reasons. Not only is it one of our most affordable options, it will also keep your petrol costs at a minimum thanks to its excellent fuel efficiency. It has plenty of space for your luggage and work gear, and is an automatic for easy driving, which is especially helpful if you're new to the city.
Naturally, there's much more than just compact vehicles on offer when you choose your Sydney car rental. From hybrid rentals for eco-friendliness, to durable SUVs for trips out of town, to luxury models such as the Mercedes for professional trips and lavish road trips throughout the city and beyond.
Where can I book a hire car in Sydney?
There are four Thrifty locations where you can book and pick up your Sydney car rental. These are dotted around the city, ensuring you'll never have to drive too far to pick up or drop off your vehicle.
These are the four Sydney car hire Thrifty locations:
Sydney Domain: Our Sydney Domain office is the closest to the CBD, located in the Domain Car Park on Sir John Young Crescent.
Alexandria: The Thrifty Alexandria office is between Sydney Airport and the CBD. It is less than 10 minutes by foot to the Mascot Train Station on the corner of Bourke and Gardeners Roads.
Artarmon: Our Artarmon office is located north of Sydney, close to the junction between the M1 Highway and Pacific Highway. We’re also not far from the North Shore Private Hospital, and a 13-minute walk from the Artarmon Train Station.
Sydney Airport: Looking for a Sydney car hire as soon as you land? You’ll find Thrifty in all three terminal buildings of the Sydney Airport, ready for you to pick up your rental and go.
You might also remember our Darlinghurst location. This office is temporarily closed (the Sydney Domain office is not far away), and we will update this page once Darlinghurst is open once again. We apologise for any inconvenience in the meantime.
How much does it cost to hire a car in Sydney?
The cost of a Sydney car rental can vary greatly, depending on what kind of car you’re looking for, when you’d like to pick it up, and how long you’d like to rent it for. You might also be able to take advantage of one of our fantastic specials, so be sure to double check our specials page for current deals.
You’ll also need to consider whether you’d like to upgrade your Standard Protection to Premium or Ultimate Protection, and if you’ll need optional extras such as a baby seat or GPS unit.
That said, for a very rough idea of the cost of a Sydney car hire, you can expect to pay $80-$120 per day for a standard compact vehicle, such as a Toyota Corolla or a Toyota Yaris.
Hybrid cars and SUVs typically cost a little more, usually around the $120-$160 per day range, again depending on the model.
Larger vehicles, premium 4WDs, and luxury Sydney car rental options can cost $200 per day or more.
Keep in mind, booking in advance will help to ensure you get the model you’re after (including the most economical ones), and making the most of specials will help to keep your overall trip costs down.
Where can I pick up or drop off my hire car after hours in Sydney?
You can pick up and drop off your Sydney car rental after hours at any of our locations around the city. However, after hours pick-ups and drop-offs are all completed on a case-by-case basis, so you’ll need to call your rental location to discuss exactly what you need so the office manager can make arrangements.
Fortunately, many of our locations for Sydney car hire have opening hours that are designed to meet demand. For example, the Sydney Airport location is open every day of the week from early in the morning until late at night, and our Alexandria location is open throughout the week and during the mornings on Saturday and Sunday, so hopefully you can avoid needing to organise an after-hours rental or drop-off.
