Car Rental Port Macquarie Airport

Port Macquarie Airport is  just a seven-minute drive from the CBD in your rental car. Port Macquarie sits around halfway up the New South Wales Coast, 390 kilometres north of Sydney and 570 kilometres south of Brisbane. Port Macquarie is surrounded by nature, with national parks in every direction, the Innes Lake to the south and the mouth of the Hastings River bordering the town's northern border. Port Macquarie is one of the older settlements in the area, with a colonial history stretching back over 200 years.

First, head to the visitor information centre and pick up a pamphlet for the heritage trail; this will outline the buildings to look out for and their history, then take a self-driving tour of Port Macquarie and see them for yourself. Another option is to book the heritage trail walk to take a guided tour of the town on foot. See the cemeteries, courthouses, museums, government buildings and the churches of the region.

Port Macquarie has the best of both worlds in multiple senses. Located near farmland, wineries, and the ocean, it is a haven for food lovers. Try one of more than half dozen wineries just outside the region. With a temperate climate, the grapes burst with flavour, and the wineries have been internationally recognised for their quality. Seafood also brings many visitors to the town with access to high-quality fresh seafood at a range of restaurants, ranging from fine dining to pub meals; it's all great quality and will have you coming back for more.

See Incredible Nature With Your Car Hire

You can find some incredible nature spots both within walking distance of the CBD and further out driving in your car hire. Port Macquarie has been called the ‘Koala capital’ for its steady population of koalas that feast on the large eucalyptus trees that surround the town. On many of the walks, such as the Googik Heritage walking track, which runs from Lake Innes to St Columba Anglican School, the scenic 2-kilometre walk is a popular stroll for both visitors and locals.

A 40-minute drive north of Port Macquarie is Limeburners Creek National Park, a coastal national park filled with wildlife, surfing, beach walks, Aboriginal cultural heritage and more. See koalas, dingoes, quolls, and for the very fortunate, a sighting of the rare ground parrot. Stroll along the saltwater lake, the beaches or the inland forest walking trails.

Just a 15-minute drive south of the CBD is Lake Innes Nature reserve. The lake makes a great afternoon out with stunning scenery, swimming opportunities, and the Innes Ruins, a sign of early colonial settlement. Get out on the lake in a kayak or walk around and try to spot some of the local inhabitants, like  kangaroos and wallabies.

50 minutes south, close to Manning Point, is the Crowdy Bay National Park. Pristine coastline, native animals spotting, camping, whale watching, hiking and swimming are just some of the opportunities at the park.

Drive to the Best Sites and Restaurants in a Rental Car

Port Macquarie is filled with fantastic restaurants, with many of them featured in restaurant guides for Australia. You won't have a problem finding something to eat or drink with the wineries outside town and cellar door experiences. Spend the first part of your visit taking in the colonial sites and incredible food before venturing out into nature. Take in some culture at Glasshouse Regional Gallery or step back in time at the Timbertown Heritage Theme Park. With more zoo's, animal sanctuaries, theme parks, museums, shopping, bars, pubs and clubs than can be seen in one visit, you're sure to come back again.
