Things to see and do with a rental car in Newcastle
Around 2 hours drive north of Sydney, you'll discover all the delights of the harbour side city of Newcastle. When you get to Newcastle there is much to see and do and a hire car will provide you with the ultimate convenience. While you're in the area here are some of our top tips:
Enjoy a day at the beach: Located right next to the water, Newcastle has a great range of beaches to visit. Bar Beach on Memorial Drive is one of the most popular where swimmers, surfers and even Hang Gliders come to enjoy the breathtaking views of the white stretching sand and sparkling blue waters. Of course, just like any other beach in Australia make sure you slip slop slap and stay within the flags when swimming.
Get to know the history of Newcastle: Following the Convict and Industry Walking Tour that starts from the Convict Lumber yard on the corner of Watt and Scott Streets, is a great way to see the remnants of the early convict settlement through industrial monuments that still stand today. The tour ends at the Newcastle Museum, home to some standout exhibitions that showcase the convict heritage of Newcastle. Other historic places to visit include Maitland Gaol, Newcastle at War Walking Tour and the Newcastle Ghost Tour.
Drive to the nearby Hunter Region: If you have a few extra days up your sleeve then the 1.5 hours' drive to the Hunter Valley from Newcastle is definitely a must-do, which will take you through some beautiful countryside and vineyard territory. Once you've arrived in the Hunter Region, stop by one of the many wineries, breweries and champagne houses that call the area home. Of course, if you plan to be testing one too many beverages, then join one of the daily wine tours and leave the driving to the following day.
Stuck in the airport? Newcastle Airport is the main airport servicing the Newcastle and Hunter region, located in the central coast of New South Wales, Australia. Whether you're flying into Newcastle Airport or are simply waiting to kill time until your next flight, there's plenty to keep you entertained in the vicinity.
Insomnia Coffee is the place to be. From Arabica bean brewed coffees to tasty focaccias it's sure to fulfil your jetsetting appetite. There's also the News Travels newsagency outlet, which is the ideal place to pick up a good book or magazine for your travels.
If you have any questions about flight information, just stop by the Newcastle Airport Information desk or if you are after a hire car for your exploration of Newcastle come speak to one of our friendly Thrifty staff members.
