Car Rental Mount Isa Airport

Flying into Mount Isa Airport will see you arrive in classic outback Queensland. Not far from the Northern Territory border, Mount Isa is a full 20-hour drive from Brisbane on the east coast and around a 7-hour drive from the nearest coastline to the north. The area around the town is filled with classic outback scenery, and Mount Isa is just the place to call home base. Mount Isa is located on the banks of the Leichhardt River, which flows from Lake Moondarra just to the north of Mount Isa. This river and lake have led Mount Isa to become the gateway to the area and an outback oasis to explore. Explore the region’s rivers, plains, national parks and other regional towns with your rental car.

Within Mount Isa, you will find a number of fun activities, mostly revolving around the town's mining history, including mine tours and fossil discovery. Around Mount Isa, you will find a number of fantastic natural locations with walking trails to enjoy. From just outside town to a national park a few hours drive away, the scenery doesn’t disappoint. Get the lay of the land with the Mount Isa City Lookout right inside Mount Isa’s CBD; it gives sweeping views of the city. With restaurants ranging from fine dining to casual pub meals and a diverse range of shopping too, there is plenty to do in the heart of the city as well. Discover art galleries, boutique stores, water parks and more.

Discover Mining and More with Your Car Rental

To discover the best of Mount Isa’s tourism, head to Outback at Isa. With multiple attractions and a visitors centre, it makes the perfect place to start your Mount Isa trip.

On the site, you can travel underground in the Hard Times Mine Underground Tour. Get into gear, complete with cap lamps and orange overalls, before you head underground. The guide, an experienced miner, will detail the history of the mine and how it operated as you descend down into the mine. See the mining tools that are used in every day mining and even try some yourself. It is recommended to wear light and loose clothing as you will put on the overalls provided on top of what you are wearing.

The Isa Experience will take you through the town's 90-year history. On the site of Outback at Isa, you can discover the history of Isa through interactive displays on a self-guided tour. The new addition to the experience ‘Allan’s Outback Gems’ is not to be missed.

Also on site are the Mount Isa Regional Art Gallery and the Riversleigh Fossil Discovery Centre. If you only have a short amount of time, it is best to head to Outback at Isa to make the most of your time here.

Outback Scenery is Yours to Explore with a Hire Car

Pack some nature into your trip by experiencing the surroundings of Mount Isa. Drive 20-minutes north of Mount Isa in your Thrifty car to Lake Moondarra, a great spot for camping, hiking and fishing. The lake operates  tours to explore the area. It is packed with barramundi – the great thing is you don’t need a permit to fish in the lake, but there is a catch limit. Take in the lake from one of the picnic areas and cook your catch on one of the free barbeques that are dotted around the lake.
