Car Rental Mitchell Downtown

We’re in the Australian Capital Territory, at Mitchell Downtown! Mitchell is an industrial area just outside the city of Canberra. Named after Major Sir Thomas Livingstone Mitchell, Mitchell is an area well worth exploring.

The climate in Mitchell is warm and temperate. Mitchell can have significant rainfall, so be prepared for this on your trip. However, despite the rain, we know you’ll have an awesome time exploring Mitchell and the surrounding areas.

Your trip to Mitchell will be filled with endless exploring, as you explore not only this suburb, but the city of Canberra and surrounding areas, too. We know you’ll love it all, in your Thrifty rental car.

Explore Mitchell, with Thrifty

There’s plenty to do and see around Mitchell. From glorious parkland and nature reserves to distilleries, and more - you’ll have plenty of options to spend your days!

The Gungaderra Grasslands Nature Reserve is part of the Canberra Nature Park and is a beautiful space. Here, you’ll find common plants and animals that are native to the Canberra region. Enjoy animals like the golden sun moth and perunga grasshopper or keep a lookout for a rare plant species or two. This is the perfect spot to have a picnic and sunny afternoon chills with friends, so make the most of it when the weather is nice!

There’s also the award-winning Baldwin Distilling Company, which is Australia’s only dedicated bourbon distillery. Founded to try and find an Australian alternative to American bourbon, this distillery promises uncompromising quality and is a direct source to the Australian market.

Of course, no holiday or trip would be complete without delicious food. There are quite a few lovely cafes to enjoy brekkie and a coffee at, like Cafe Gommy’s, Bean Addiction Espresso, and Wagonga Coffee to name a few! For dinner, we recommend heading into Canberra, where you’ll find endless restaurants and bars, like Tipsy Bull, Raku Japanese Restaurant, and Akiba.

Hit The Road, With Thrifty

There are plenty of options for a road trip from Mitchell. So buckle up, get your favourite snacks, and let’s go.

The Snowy Mountains are just a two and a half-hour drive south of Mitchell. Make sure to wrap up warm as you head to the slopes. Choose between Thredbo or Perisher and get set for the mountains, apres-ski, and endless fun while you’re here. If you are visiting in the summer months, why not hike Mount Kosciuszko? At 2,228 metres above sea level, it's the tallest mountain in mainland Australia. Plenty of hikers attempt it during the warmer months, so you won’t be alone - just make sure to bring extra layers for the cold nights.

If you want to spot some native animals, head to Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. It’s just an hour southwest of Mitchell and is situated inside the Namadgi National Park. Here, you’ll find kangaroos, cockatoos, emus, and koalas. Take your time and visit the Birrigai Time Trial or the Gibraltar Peak. The harsh hike is well worth the panoramic views.

Of course, if you’re in Mitchell, it makes sense to visit Canberra while you’re here. It’s a mere fifteen-minute drive to the capital after all. Spend some time at the Australian War Memorial, before visiting the National Museum of Australia, and the National Gallery of Australia.
