Maitland has a mild climate that is normally warm and temperate throughout the year. Expect a fair bit of rainfall whenever you visit, but don’t let this dampen your spirits. Simply throw on some gumboots, a rain mac, and keep on exploring.
Maitland will be a stunning adventure. There is plenty to do and see within the region itself, as well as in the nearby towns. It’s within an hour to Newcastle, and two hours from Sydney - so any adventure is possible with Thrifty.

Let's start with the famous Maitland Gaol! Maitland Gaol is one of New South Wales heritage-listed sites; first opened in December 1848, it was one of the longest operating correctional institutions in Australia. During its time, it housed some of Australia’s most notorious and hardened criminals, before closing in January 1998. Now, it’s open and ready to be explored and it’s well worth the visit.
There is much more to do and see while you’re here. In fact, Maitland has a thriving arts scene, and you’ll find creativity on every corner and street! Keep a lookout while you’re walking through the area, as there are beautiful murals throughout the city. Head to Maitland Regional Art Gallery to find touring exhibitions and famous artworks.
If you get hungry, don’t worry - there’s plenty of options available for you! Dine at delicious eateries like Fratelli Roma, Sudania Cafe and Restaurant, and Coquun.
The Levee is a favourite amongst visitors - it’s a hub of activity and filled with some great entertainment and dining options. Running parallel to the Hunter River, it’s a gorgeous excursion for an afternoon stroll and exploration, plus a delicious bite to eat.
