Enjoy a taste of Italy around Five Dock in your hire car

Five Dock is part of a trio of suburbs referred to collectively as Little Italy, along with vibrant and friendly Leichhardt, and the charming heritage-listed ‘Garden Suburb’ of Haberfield. Each neighbourhood has its own distinctive flavour. But one thing they have in common is exceptional food, making the area a much-loved regular haunt for food bloggers. So, whether you jump on a food tour or simply browse the shops and streets, we recommend taking the time to explore each locale.

Almost ten percent of the community in Five Dock were born in Italy, with double the number claiming roots to the old country. The Ferragosto street festival is a lively event held annually in August on Great North Road, celebrating Five Dock’s mainly Aeolian heritage. Although the local favourite, Pasticceria Tamborrino (arguably the finest in Sydney), is  run by a couple originally hailing from Rome.

At Five Dock, the living is easy – and easily accessible in your hire car

If you have kids needing to let off steam, special mention should go to the dynamic Timbrell Park on Henley Marine Drive, which was awarded Best Playspace in Australia in 2010 by Parks and Leisure Australia. This innovative playground (built by the Touched by Olivia foundation) is fully inclusive, allowing for families and children of all ages and abilities to enjoy its features. There’s also a café at Livvi’s Place, plus barbecue and picnic facilities if you prefer to have lunch on the grass.
