Batemans Bay has everything you would expect from a picturesque NSW coastal town. Fantastic nature walks, more beaches than you could possibly see, incredible fishing opportunities, as well as great restaurants and food. There are also a number of attractions such as wildlife parks and museums to enjoy during your time in Batemans Bay. The town is also just a 2-hour drive from Canberra, with the capital city lying situated west of the coastal town. Whilst in the area, you might visit one of the national parks on the way to Canberra, such as the Deua National Park or the Namadgi National Park. Both parks offer stunning hiking trails, free camping spots, panoramic views and native Australian flora and fauna you won’t find anywhere else in the world.
In Batemans Bay, there are also a number of natural locations and activities to explore, with several beaches such as Surf Beach and Broulee Beach, both within a 20-minute drive of Batemans Bay Downtown in your rental car. Some of these beaches are part of dedicated walking trails - experience the sunshine on the Oaky Beach Walking Track, just a 25-minute drive around the cape. This walking track is located in Murramarang National Park, just north of Batemans Bay. If you feel like doing more than just walking, the trail also offers great swimming spots and fishing. It has a remote atmosphere surrounded by lush green forests and ferns. If you’re quiet, you might even see a swamp wallaby or two bounding around the track. This walking trail is just one of the fantastic walking opportunities in the area that features beaches, animals, forests and stunning views.
The Eurobodalla Regional Botanic Gardens are just a 5-minute drive south of Batemans Bay. With free admission into the gardens, it’s easy to enjoy the garden’s stunning collection. If you are there on the first Sunday of the month, we recommend going on the guided walk hosted by one of the garden volunteers. The garden offers a number of walks, from the Aboriginal heritage walk, focusing on traditional uses of the plants housed in the garden, to the Arboretum Track, with a formed path and gentle slopes. All in all, there are five separate walks ranging from 1-2 kilometres long, so they are appropriate for all age groups.
A 15-minute drive south, past the gardens in Mogo, is the Mogo Wildlife Park. The park is home to several exotic animals, from lions, tigers, rhinos and the ever-adorable red panda. You can even purchase up-close encounters with the animals, such as feeding a lion or playing with some meerkats. It is recommended to spend at least two hours touring the park.
Batemans Bay is renowned for its oysters and oyster tasting. Book a tasting, or better yet, go out and collect your own oysters with a kayak tour of the bay. It doesn’t get any fresher or tastier than Batemans Bay oysters. Continue to see the water on the Merina River Cruise, a refreshing look at the local environment coupled with an informative tour of the area. Visit the historical sites, such as Nelligen. You can also book dinner cruises that feature fresh local seafood.
Visit the Batemans Bay Heritage Museum and Birdland Animal Park for more animal fun, or sink a few holes at Club Catalina, a world-class golf course within Batemans Bay. There is so much to do and so many places to drive with a hire car in Batemans Bay, so start planning your NSW trip today.
