Altona North sits just 10 kilometres southwest of Melbourne's CBD, meaning you can be in the heart of Melbourne in 20-minutes. Altona North has a quiet, relaxed suburban feel, giving a nice break from the hustle and bustle of Melbourne. It has everything you might expect from an inner-city suburb, with shops, boutiques, restaurants, cafes, pubs, supermarkets, sporting activities and walking trails. If you are planning on shopping during your time in Altona North, then visit the Altona Gate Shopping Centre. Altona Gate is the largest shopping centre in Altona North, and includes a supermarket, post office, dozens of stores, beauty salons, retail, chemists, and more.
Hiring a car in Altona North opens up not only the entire suburb of Altona North but all of Melbourne and Victoria. See the many museums, art galleries, heritage buildings, parks, and theatres that make Melbourne one of the most liveable cities in the world (in fact, it was rated the world's most liveable city 7 years straight). In addition, there are many day and weekend trips open to you throughout Victoria. From regional cities such as Bendigo, Ballarat and Geelong, to Victoria's national parks such as the Grampians, Alpine, Great Otway, Little Desert and Wilsons Promontory National Park.
While you are cruising through the streets of Altona North, you might want to take in a few of the local attractions. Located on the edge of Paisley Park, home to the Altona Lakes Golf Course, is the Altona Miniature Railway. The railway is open to the public on the third Sunday of every month. Take a miniature train ride along the 1.5 kilometres of track across bridges and zig zags. If all this sounds like a good time, then head to the railway between 11 am to 4 pm for a fun activity that is reasonably priced.
Once you're finished on the train, stretch your legs at one of Altona's walking trails, such as the Kororoit Creek Trail or a walk around Cherry Lake. The lake features a 3.5km walking trail, barbecue and picnic facilities and playgrounds. See the native pelicans and swans that drift along the lake.
A fun free activity in Melbourne is to drive around to all the major heritage sites. Melbourne is full of gold rush era architecture as money from Victoria's goldfields poured in during the early to mid-1800s. At one point in time, Melbourne was bringing more gold wealth than any city on earth. See the heritage sites such as The Royal Exhibition Centre, the Melbourne Town Hall, Flinders Street Station, St Paul's Cathedral, St Patrick's Cathedral, Victoria State Parliament, and many more.
If you are operating on a tight budget or just love free tours, check out some of Melbourne's free galleries and museums. The National Gallery of Victoria has over 70,000 works in its collection and is just a 25-minute drive from the Altona North downtown area. Other free entry venues include The Australian Centre for Contemporary Arts, the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI) and the State Library of Victoria.
Take a trip away from Altona North and the Melbourne metro area to one of the beautiful national parks in Victoria. The Grampians National Park is located around 3 hours west of Altona North and Melbourne. This heritage-listed national park is home to waterfalls, sandstone mountains, famous hiking trails and a large number of native animals. In total, you could find 350 species of bird, 36 species of mammal, 35 reptiles, 13 crustaceans and 6 fish species and 11 species of bats. In addition, the Grampians are home to the largest waterfall in Victoria, the Mackenzie Falls. Take some of the stunning walking trails to see all this and more.
