Things to see and do with a car rental in Weipa

Weipa is largely known for its status as the largest Bauxite mine in the Southern Hemisphere, but that doesn’t mean there’s nothing else to do in town! The Cape is in fact home to some of the best fishing you’ll find anywhere in Australia. You can either hire a boat and gear to get out on the water, or book a chartered trip to try your luck with the rod.

You can also visit the local mine for a tour to see how Bauxite is mined and transported, or simply spend a day in town tasting the fare from the restaurants and picking up a few treasures at the local shops. If it’s scenery you’re after, pack yourself a picnic and drive to Lake McLeod for a relaxing afternoon.

Additionally, the Weipa Shell Mounds are the local mystery and main attraction. South of the town on the banks of the Pine, Hey, Embley and Mission Rivers, are massive piles of shells that are estimated to weigh roughly 200,000 tonnes. Some mounds measure up to nine metres in height, and it’s believed they have been there for roughly 800 years. No one has yet found a plausible reason why they came to be, but it’s certainly a unique sight to behold.
