Things to see and do with a Mt Gambier rental car

Known for its volcanic landscape, crater lakes and incredible scenery, the Mt Gambier region is one you have to see to believe. Mt Gambier itself is one of Australia’s newest volcanoes. As well as the gorgeous mountain scenery, this spot offers four incredible lake-filled maars. The most popular of these is Blue Lake, which turns a startlingly bright shade of blue from December to March every year. Try a guided tour or walk the 3.6-kilometre trail for gorgeous scenery and viewing platforms.

The Umpherston Sinkhole is another natural local attraction that can’t be missed. This is an outdoor space where you’ll find a circular sunken garden filled with lush greenery and flowers. It was once like many of the limestone caves in the area, but when the cavern collapsed, it left behind a surreal imprint upon the land that will leave a lasting imprint on your memory.

Another exceptional spot is the Naracoorte Caves National Park, just an hour north of Mt Gambier in your rental car. This is South Australia’s only World Heritage site, and is where you can find the country’s most complete fossil record. History here stretches back over 500,000 years, and entry is completely free (although you will need to pay for an official tour).
