Conveniently located

Jump straight off the plane and head to the Thrifty rental office across the road from the T2 Terminal. You'll find us on the ground floor underneath the short-term parking and Parke Royal hotel. We also have counters in both Terminal 1 (Qantas) and Terminal 3 (Virgin Australia) near the baggage carousels on the first floor. However, if these counters are unattended, simply head across to the main office.

If you're not flying into the city, it's still very easy to get to Melbourne airport. The SkyBus runs every 10 minutes to and from the city 24/7, with additional services to and from St Kilda between 6am and 7pm. Alternatively, you can catch a taxi.

Small to medium rentals

Thrifty stocks a range of passenger vehicles, such as the Mitsubishi Mirage and Kia Cerato. Fuel-efficient and economical, these smaller cars are great for running around the city. However, we also have larger sedans that are perfect for family getaways. The Toyota Camry and Holden Commodore are highly popular, for their cutting-edge safety features and comfortable interiors.

We also have an excellent range of SUVS, including the Mitsubishi ASX, Toyota Kluger and Ford Territory to name a few. For superior comfort, unbeatable on-road performance and state-of-the-art technology, you can't go past one of our SUVs.

Please note that the commercial fleet at Melbourne Airport is supplied via the Tullamarine office.

Things to see and do with a rental car in Melbourne

Melbourne is a city alive and buzzing with eateries, cafes, attractions and exciting things to do, so a rental car is a great way to get around and see as much of it as possible. Within the city itself, you can check out Federation Square and its lively restaurant and cultural scene, take a stroll through the Royal Botanic Gardens or shop up a storm at the Queen Victoria Market.

Attractions right on the city's doorstep include Australia's most famous road trip, the Great Ocean Road, as well as the Yarra Valley, which is a true wine-lover's dream. Geelong, Ballarat and Daylesford are all gorgeous spots, filled with history and culture. Meanwhile, Phillip Island and the Dandenong Ranges both have incredible scenery, and are great places to explore.

Tips and advice when visiting the Melbourne region

  • Be careful when driving on tram tracks, and give way to commuters getting off the trams
  • In the Melbourne CBD, hook turns are common (turning right from the left lane) and there are many one-way streets to watch out for
