About Kununurra and the region

Kununurra is 828km south west of Darwin and 1043 east of Broome and is the eastern start of the magnificent Kimberley Region. From a commercial point of view Kununurra services the Argyle Diamond Mine, has a strong agricultural industry and is reliant on tourism.  Agriculture has been enhanced by the Ord River Scheme, the Ord River Irrigation Area (ORIA) is the product of a bold and imaginative plan to develop part of the nation's tropical north for intensive irrigated agriculture by harnessing the waters of the Ord River.

50kms south east of Kununurra Lake Argyle is a massive storage reservoir as well as a tourist attraction, Lake Argyle formed where the Ord River enters the Carr-Boyd Ranges just south of Kununurra. Lake Argyle is now the largest fresh water storage in mainland Australia. Its storage capacity is 10,760 million cubic metres of water or about 9 times the water volume of Sydney Harbour. The East Kimberley Region is rich in aboriginal culture, spectacular scenery and some of the best fishing in the world. Whilst the road from Darwin to Broome including Kununurra is a good sealed road there are other roads in the region that are 4wd only unsealed roads that are subject to seasonal accessibility, please check road conditions before driving on any unsealed roads
