How old do I have to be to rent a car in Australia?
At Thrifty, we rent cars, as well as selected commercial vehicles able to be driven on a standard licence, to those who are 21 and over. For those who are aged between 21 and 24 (inclusive), we do charge an age surcharge of $27.50 per day on top of your rental fee, and the vehicles you can rent are limited to our standard range.
What driver’s licence do I need to rent a car?
In terms of licences, we recognise all current Australian and overseas licences – as long as they are not provisional or probationary.
Accepted driver’s licences must be in English with a photo, and should be produced at the commencement of the rental. They must not be expired. Should the valid driver’s licence be in another language or have no photo, Thrifty will accept a certified translation in English or an international driver’s permit.

Is there a limit to how long I can rent a Thrifty vehicle for?
The minimum rental period for our range is 24 hours – which gives you, at the least, an entire day of zipping around in one of our awesome vehicles.
Thrifty doesn’t have a maximum limit on how long you can hire a car for. In fact, we offer long-term car rental discounts. If you think you’ll need a rental car for more than 30 days, give us a call on 1300 367 227 so we can provide you with a longer-term rental rate.
Do I need to pay a security deposit for my hire car?
Thrifty asks for a security deposit (bond) when you arrive to collect your hire vehicle. This amount will vary depending on the rental vehicle type, how you are paying and where you are collecting your ride. This amount could be anywhere from $200 to $1100 depending on the above circumstances, so it’s wise to plan ahead.
Do I need insurance before renting a vehicle from you?
Some credit card and travel insurance policies don’t cover car rental, so it’s worth investigating Thrifty’s protection options.
All bookings at Thrifty include Standard Protection, such as Third Party Cover. However, it’s important to bear in mind that only the authorised drivers listed on the rental agreement are allowed to drive your Thrifty rental vehicle. For extra drivers, there is an additional driver charge per day ($5.50 per driver per rental day).
Thrifty offers varying levels of protection upon booking. Our Ultimate Protection and Premium Protection options mean that, in the event of an accident, the Damage Recovery Fee charged will be reduced or waived. With all protection options, you are entitled to 24-hour roadside assistance – but if you want additional cover for varying forms of damage, our Ultimate Protection is the choice for you!

How do I pay when picking up my hire car?
When you are picking up your hire vehicle, we make it easy to pay with all major credit cards, and limited locations also accept debit card payment.
Credit card charges do apply – so check with your local Thrifty representative. Unfortunately, Thrifty doesn’t accept cash payment at any of our numerous locations – so make sure your card is safely in the wallet!
