The Best Low Cost City Escapes from Adelaide
If you’re looking to get out of Adelaide without being out of pocket, check out our guide to the many low-cost adventures that surround the city.

In Adelaide, you don’t need to travel too far for a nice break. And, if you know where to go and what to do, you don’t need to spend much. Some of the country’s best beaches, towns, wineries and scenic drives surround the city. And with a Thrifty rental car, you’ll have an easy and affordable way of reaching them. Let’s get out of Adelaide on a budget!
Fleurieu Peninsula
The Fleurieu Peninsula is an easy getaway with plenty of variety. It’s got beaches like Port Noarlunga and Moana, and it’s also got some great inland spots like Willunga and McLaren Vale, where some of the country’s best wine and produce come from. If you’d rather not splurge on a winery lunch, grab some goodies and roll out the picnic blanket at the scenic spot of your choice.

Adelaide Hills
When the city heats up, the Adelaide Hills are the go-to escape for fresh air and leafy views. The drive from the CBD to Hahndorf or Stirling takes less than 40 minutes, and the change in scenery feels instant. Browse the local shops, visit a farm gate for seasonal fruit, or take one of the many walking trails through Mount Lofty Botanic Garden. The Hills are full of free or low-cost experiences, from wildlife spotting in Cleland Conservation Park to picnicking under the gums at Bridgewater.
Barossa Valley
You don’t have to be a wine expert (or spend like one) to do the Barossa the right way. Many cellar doors offer complimentary tastings or low-cost options if you buy a bottle to take home (remembering to have a designated driver if you plan on having any alcohol). Smaller producers like Langmeil or Whistler Wines have relaxed outdoor areas that are family-friendly and picnic-ready. The drive from Adelaide takes just over an hour, passing through Gawler and rolling farmland along the way. Stop at the Barossa Farmers Market on Saturday morning for fresh local produce.
Yorke Peninsula
If you’re after some off-the-radar beaches , head to the Yorke Peninsula. Within three hours, you can reach spots like Moonta Bay, Port Vincent and Marion Bay, each offering long stretches of sand and a relaxed, old-school holiday feel. It’s a perfect region for camping or staying in budget-friendly holiday parks, many right beside the water. Pack your fishing gear or a bodyboard, and you’ll have entertainment sorted without spending a cent. The coastal drives themselves are beautiful, looping through wheat fields and salt lakes before meeting the sea.

Clare Valley
The Clare Valley is smaller and more intimate than the Barossa, but just as scenic. It’s a great option for cycling or walking, with the Riesling Trail linking cellar doors, farms, and country towns along a 35km route. You’ll also find affordable stays in heritage cottages or family-run motels that keep things simple and comfortable. On the way back, take your time driving your rental car between Clare and Auburn, taking in some of South Australia’s prettiest scenery along the way.
Port Elliot and Victor Harbor
For a classic beach break that doesn’t require planning months in advance, head to the South Coast. Port Elliot, Middleton, and Victor Harbor are all under two hours from Adelaide and ideal for families. Horseshoe Bay is one of the safest and most scenic swimming beaches in the state, with calm waves and a wide stretch of sand. The towns have a nostalgic feel, with bakeries, second-hand shops and fish-and-chip spots.
Affordable Adventures, Big Rewards
Escaping the city doesn’t always cost much, meaning it’s always easy to justify a quick escape. Add a Thrifty rental car to the equation, and you’ve got a low-cost way of getting around that makes journeys like these even easier to justify. Pick your place, pack your bags and explore the spots beyond the city that are as affordable as they are unforgettable.
