Mackay is the coastal Queensland city where adventures of all kinds are only a drive away. Whether you’re winding through rainforests or cruising along the coastline, it’s an area that you’ll want to return to again and again. And, with Thrifty’s great rental car deals year-round, this journey is closer than you think! But before you head off, let’s dive into some of the area’s best places to seek out and tick off. Here goes.

Cape Hillsborough
Cape Hillsborough National Park where you’ll find a rainforest, eucalypt forest, beaches, rocky headlands covered in hoop pines and volcanic rock formations, all in the one place. And, getting there is all part of the fun. From Mackay, take the famous Bruce Highway for around 40 minutes and take in the views while you’re at it. You could stop by Ball Bay for a quick dip or view of the ocean, before continuing to Cape Hillsborough. If you can get the family up bright and early, you can say ‘good morning’ to the kangaroos and wallabies as they bounce along the shore
Go a Little Wild at Eungella National Park
For a scenic drive with a scenic destination, Eungella National Park should be on your map. Take a 1.5-hour drive through rolling hills, sugarcane fields and the Pioneer Valley, eventually landing in the National Park. Park the car and head out on the walking track of your choice, which can take anywhere from half an hour to a full day, depending on your appetite for adventure. After working up a sweat, cool off in the rock pool at Finch Hatton Gorge then bask on the Broken River picnic area when your tummy starts calling your name. While you’re here, keep an eye out for the creatures that call this paradise home, like the Eungella day frog, Eungella spiny cray and Eungella honeyeater. There are definitely worse ways to spend your day!
Sweeten the Deal at Sarina Sugar Shed
For something sweet, take a half hour drive to the Sarina Sugar Shed, where you can discover the region’s sugar cane farming history. Their one hour guided tour will take you back in time when the industry began, exploring how the farming methods have changed over time. You’ll see how sugar cane plants are turned into your everyday sugar, plus get to sample local produce made with sugar cane—everything from sauces and chutneys to rum and non-alcoholic ginger beer. Just remember, if you’re the one who’s drinking, make sure someone else is the one who’s driving. Afterwards, explore the small towns and beaches of Grasstree Beach and Campwin Beach to relax, swim or a bit of both.

Enjoy the Views at Mackay Harbour and Lamberts Lookout
For an easy drive from Mackay, head north to Mackay Harbour and Lamberts Lookout. At Mackay Harbour, take a walk along the marina before stopping at one of the nearby restaurants for some fresh, local seafood. After that, continue to Lamberts Lookout, where you’ll be greeted by stunning views of the Coral Sea. And, if you’re there between June and October, head to the upper level and look through the binoculars—you might be lucky enough to see some humpback whales!
