Car Subscriptions Explained
Buying a car isn't the only way to have one. If you need a vehicle for a few months or want to avoid the long-term commitment of ownership, a car subscription could be worth considering.
Here's what you need to know about car subscriptions.
What Is a Car Subscription?
A car subscription lets you drive a vehicle for a monthly fee, without having to buy it. Think of it as a longer-term alternative to car hire, with many of the usual costs of owning a car included.
Unlike purchasing a vehicle, you don't have to worry about its resale value or depreciation. And compared to traditional leasing, subscriptions generally offer shorter commitments and greater flexibility.
How Do Car Subscriptions Work?
With Thrifty YourRide, you choose from four subscription plans based on the type of vehicle you need:
- Core: Compact, city-friendly cars like the Toyota Corolla or Mazda 3.
- Classic: Medium SUVs and larger sedans like the Subaru Forester or Nissan X-Trail.
- Plus: Larger SUVs, 4WDs and family vehicles like the Toyota Kluger or Kia Carnival.
- Pro: Premium vehicles like the Audi Q5 or Toyota Prado.
Plans start from $999 per month, with vehicle availability depending on your chosen tier.
At Thrifty, the shortest subscription is 90 days. After that, your subscription can renew monthly, for up to 360 consecutive days in total. You can also request a vehicle change or cancel your subscription, subject to the terms and notice requirements.
What's Included in a Car Subscription?
One of the biggest benefits of a car subscription is having many of your vehicle expenses covered by a single monthly payment.
With Thrifty YourRide, your subscription includes:
- Vehicle registration
- Routine servicing and maintenance
- 24/7 roadside assistance
- Collision Damage Waiver
- 1,800 kilometres per month
You'll still need to cover expenses like fuel, tolls and parking, with additional kilometres charged at $0.25 each.
A $500 security deposit is also required before collection, which is refundable at the end of your subscription, less any outstanding charges. Check the terms and conditions for details.
Who Are Car Subscriptions Good For?
There are plenty of reasons you might need a car without wanting to buy one.
Maybe you've just moved to a new city and need time to settle in. Perhaps you're between vehicles, working somewhere temporarily or simply not ready to commit to a long-term purchase.
A subscription can also be useful if your driving needs are likely to change. You might need a smaller car now, but something with more room down the track.
Whatever your situation, a subscription gives you the freedom to drive without taking on all the responsibilities of ownership.
