Adelaide's Best Beaches

Perhaps Adelaide’s best kept secret is its array of beautiful and rugged beaches. Indeed, just one trip to the coast while visiting the South Australian capital will have you questioning why you haven’t holidayed here before. Adelaide’s beaches are  quiet and calm, making them perfect for those that just want to relax on the shore, with a dip in the ocean in between. And the best part about Adelaide’s beaches is that they’re close to the city centre, with the beautiful blue water enticing people every single day of the week. If you’re looking for what beaches to travel to for your next trip to Adelaide, read on.

Glenelg Beach
Glenelg Beach

Glenelg Beach is one of the most popular beaches in Adelaide and it’s easy to see why. There are plenty of cafes and restaurants surrounding the beach, meaning you can set yourself up for a beautiful day by the sea with complete ease. The beach is very wide so finding a secluded spot for your towel is never an issue, even in the peak summer season. And, if it gets too hot, you can  head into one of the many shops in the area for a blast of aircon if the ocean isn’t cutting it.

Brighton Beach

Brighton Beach is a little further out, but still just as popular as Glenelg Beach. Here, you can enjoy the South Australian sunshine and grab a bite to eat at one of the many cafes and restaurants before enjoying a picturesque stroll along the shore. One of the great highlights of this beach is the Brighton Jetty Classic which happens each year. If you’re lucky enough to be in town for it, you can enjoy a series of great races. There’s lots to do at Brighton Beach, from swimming to shopping and everything in between. However you choose to spend a day, is up to you.

Semaphore Beach

Semaphore Beach has one of the most stunning coastlines. With expansive views across the huge sand dunes that line the shore, you’ll be hard pushed to find a more beautiful sight in Adelaide. One of the most beautiful parts of this spot is the contrast of gorgeous golden sand with the vista of the CBD skyline in the distance. At just 14 kilometres from the CBD, it draws crowds in summer but nothing too hectic. Head here if you want a calming and relaxing break from the city.

Second Valley Beach
Second Valley Beach

Find new heights and admire the view from one of the rocky points at Second Valley Beach. This rocky outcrop is a little different from your everyday sandy beach but its turquoise waters and colourful rock formations offer a nice change. Second Valley Beach has excellent snorkel spots with  incredible reefs of gorgeous blue ocean water which all makes for very Instagrammable surroundings. This one is a little further out from Adelaide at 74 kilometres, but it’s well worth a day trip.

Henley Beach

Henley Beach is the perfect spot for a midday or pre-work dip for many people that live in Adelaide. We think you’ll love it too as an easy spot to take a break from the hustle and bustle of the city. Head here for calm waters that’ll welcome you in at any time of day. The esplanade also makes a great place for beach strolls, runs, and the odd workout or two. Head on to the jetty for a beautiful sunset and experience the expansive views of the horizon – all  just 12 kilometres from the city centre.

Adelaide has some beautiful beaches and none of them are too far from the city centre. From the gorgeous coastlines, tranquil blue waters, and the easy access from the CBD, it makes sense to head to one of these in your Thrifty rental the next time you’re in town.
