Karri and the Great Southern - 3 Days

Karri and the Great SouthernDay 1: PERTH - PEMBERTON (309 KMS - 3½ HOURS)

Arrive in Perth and collect your car from the Thrifty airport desk or location office. Spend the morning discovering Perth and why not take a picnic lunch at the beautiful Kings Park with spectacular views of Perth and the Swan River.

Leave Perth just after midday and begin your journey south to Pemberton. Stop at Mandurah to admire the magnificent Dawesville Channel - Port Bouvard marine development. Continue to follow your map and the signs through Bunbury and onto Busselton, which has the longest jetty in the Southern Hemisphere. From Busselton you turn left onto the Bussell Highway leading you through the wine-growing region to Margaret River Township and onto the famous Karri forest and the picturesque town of Pemberton arriving late afternoon.

Day 2: PEMBERTON - ALBANY (243KMS - 3 HOURS)

In the morning, visit the mighty "Gloucester Tree" which houses the highest fire lookout tree in the world, 60 metres above the ground. You can also see an impressive range of local woodcrafts for sale, sample the produce of the local wineries or fish for rainbow trout in streams and dams.

Drive from Pemberton southwards towards the quaint town of Walpole, home to the famous Tree Top Walk, and the famed "Valley of the Giants". Travel on through picturesque Denmark to arrive at Western Australia's oldest town, Albany by late afternoon.

Overnight in Albany

Day 3: ALBANY - PERTH (409KMS - 4½ HOURS)

Spend the morning taking in the many attractions of Albany. Go aboard the brig "Amity", a full-scale replica of the ship that brought the first settlers to Albany in 1826. Visit the heights of Mt Clarence to enjoy the sweeping views over the town, harbour and hinterland and see the famed memorial to the Desert mounted Corps. Experience Whaleworld, Australia's largest whaling museum and drive to Frenchman's Bay, one of the many safe, picturesque swimming beaches around Albany. Explore the sights of nearby Torndirrup National Park, including the renowned Gap (a 24 metre sheer drop to the thundering seas) and the natural Bridge (a unique granite suspension over the swirling ocean). Travel back to Perth, perhaps enjoying a late lunch at one of the wineries found in the town of Mt Barker.
