Gourmet Food & Wine Tour - 4 Days

Sevenhills Winery in the Clare ValleyDay 1: PORTLAND - NARACOORTE

Today you will depart Portland and travel to Mount Gambier. Whilst here, visit the famous Blue Lake which changes from dull grey to brilliant blue each November. Visit Yoeys Traditional Fine Foods to sample fine Australian cheeses, Australian gourmet food, local honey & produce. Head north to Penola, the gateway to the Coonawarra wine region. You can stop off at some of the many wineries in the area to sample some of the wonderful reds unique to this region. When dining, be sure to try the region's specialties such as charolaiese beef, venison, duck and emu and kangaroo steaks. On the way to Naracoorte, you may like to view the abundant & varied bird life at Bool Lagoon, one of the largest wetlands in the state.

Day 2: NARACOORTE - KINGSTON OR KEITH

Before leaving Naracoorte, take a visit to the World Heritage listed Naracoorte Caves Conservation Park. See unique fossilized specimens of ice age animals. Visit the jumbuck factory for pure Australian woollen products. Head towards the coastal town of Robe where you can do a spot of fishing and, weather permitting, take a swim. Have lunch here and indulge in some succulent local lobster, before continuing along the coast to Kingston, where for dinner lobster is again an offer (Oct-Apr). Or, sample other local seafood or fish such as snapper, trivially bream and mullet. Don't forget to visit Larry, the 17 meter high Lobster, behind which there is a café and restaurant as well as a display of the district's produce.

Day 3: KINGSTON - ADELAIDE

Pack a picnic lunch, as today you will be driving at a leisurely pace along the Coorong, with its windswept beaches, shallow lagoons, towering sand dunes and plentiful birdlife. Continue on to Adelaide via the Mt Lofty ranges. Stop for an afternoon tea of 'kuchen' and coffee at the German style village of Hahndorf. Visit Beerenberg Strawberry Farm and choose from the wide range of jams, pickles and chutneys. You may even like to pick your own strawberries (Nov-May). At the Cottage Chocolate Box watch the mouth-watering morsels being made as you sample and buy. Sourdough breads from wood-fired ovens and smoked sausages, salmon and hams will also be hard to resist. After absorbing Hahndorf's history and charm, drive on to Mt Lofty for a sumptuous dinner and spectacular views before spending the night at Adelaide.

Day 4: ADELAIDE

For a visual feast as well as being a gourmand's delight, the Central Market in the city cannot be missed. The wide variety of fruits, vegetables, fish, meat, smoked kangaroo and cheese surround you with wild splashes of colour and exotic and delicious aromas. The shops and restaurants of Chinatown intermingle with the Central Market, contributing to the multicultural atmosphere and offering many tastes and flavours from Asia. There is a wide selection of restaurants throughout the metropolitan area reflecting the ethnic diversity of Adelaide offering everything from kangaroo steaks to baklava. Visit the Greek and Italian cafes of North Adelaide, Glenelg and Norwood for souvlaki and gelati. For the really brave gourmand who will try anything, don't forget to visit one of the 'Pie Carts' for Adelaide's specialty, a pie floater - an upside down pie in a bowl of pea soup.
